A Strategic Partnership with SpaceX and T-Mobile

Apple has partnered with SpaceX and US carrier T-Mobile to provide this new connectivity option. According to Bloomberg, the iOS 18.3 update, rolled out on January 27, 2025, discreetly includes support for Starlink, allowing iPhones to connect directly to satellites for sending text messages.

An Evolution from Existing Connectivity

Until now, satellite connectivity on iPhone was limited to emergency situations through a partnership with Globalstar. This new integration with Starlink offers a more seamless alternative. Without requiring the device to be aligned with a specific satellite. Moreover, the connection works automatically, even when the iPhone is stored, enhancing the user experience.

Starlink X Apple: Current Features

Currently, this feature is in beta and limited to text messaging for T-Mobile customers in the United States. However, plans are underway to extend the service to voice calls and internet access through the Starlink satellite constellation. Elon Musk has indicated that the current generation of Starlink already allows for the sending of images, music, and podcasts, with future support for video.

Starlink Availability and International Prospects

At present, this feature is exclusive to the United States and T-Mobile customers. No information has been provided regarding deployment in Europe or other regions. International users will have to wait to see if this technology will be extended to other carriers and territories.

The integration of Starlink connectivity into iPhones marks a significant advancement in how Apple envisions device connectivity. By partnering with SpaceX and T-Mobile, the Cupertino company demonstrates its commitment to providing users with innovative solutions to stay connected, even in the most remote areas. It remains to be seen how this technology will evolve and whether it will be rolled out globally in the coming years.
