Nintendo Switch: A Historic Milestone Reached!

In 2024, Nintendo achieved a historic milestone by shipping over 150 million Switch consoles worldwide. This achievement positions the Switch to surpass the total sales of the Nintendo DS. Which stands at 154 million units, and to close in on the all-time record set by the PlayStation 2 with 160 million units sold.

Impressive Numbers Despite Sales Slowdown

As of December 31, 2024, Nintendo reported a total of 150.86 million Switch units shipped. Divided between 96.18 million original models, 25.27 million Switch Lite, and 29.40 million Switch OLED.

However, the year also saw a decline in sales. Hardware sales dropped by 30%, while game sales decreased by 24% compared to the previous year. This trend is attributed to the console's longevity and increasing anticipation surrounding its successor, the Switch 2.

Key Titles Supporting the Nintendo Switch's Popularity

Despite the slowdown, several games have contributed to maintaining the Switch's appeal. "Super Mario Party Jamboree" stood out, with 6.2 million copies shipped, setting a new record for the franchise. Similarly, "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" reached 3.9 million copies, further confirming the lasting allure of this iconic series.

A Hybrid Strategy Between Switch and Switch 2?

With the upcoming release of the Switch 2 expected in 2025, Nintendo has adjusted its sales forecast, now projecting 11 million consoles sold for the current fiscal year, down from an initial estimate of 12.5 million.

Despite these adjustments, the active user base remains strong, with more than 100 million active players on the Switch. Nintendo plans to reignite demand with major releases such as "Metroid Prime 4: Beyond" and "Pokémon Legends: Z-A", while also expanding its presence through theme parks and other initiatives.
