OpenAI Announces the Launch of ChatGPT Servers in Europe

As part of its global expansion, OpenAI has officially announced the deployment of servers in Europe. This new initiative aims to provide European users of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the platform's API with local data residency, ensuring compliance with regional data sovereignty requirements.

With this new infrastructure, API clients can now choose to process their data within Europe for eligible endpoints. Additionally, new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers have the option to store their content within European data centers, ensuring local data residency.

Data Residency Implementation

API clients can enable data residency in Europe by creating a new project on the API platform dashboard and selecting Europe as the preferred region. Requests initiated through these projects will be processed locally by OpenAI, with no data retention at rest on their servers. This feature is currently available for new projects and ensures compliance with local data protection laws.

OpenAI is dedicated to maintaining high standards of privacy, security, and data compliance. The company employs advanced encryption technologies, including AES-256 for data at rest and TLS 1.2+ for data in transit. By default, OpenAI’s models are not trained using customer data unless users explicitly choose to share it.
